Defective Air Bags Safety Risk

Air Bag issues continue to place drivers and their passengers at risk. Nissan has issued a recall. The recall includes Altima, Rogue and Maxima the model year range is 2013-2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant. Due to this issue the Air Bag may not deploy or it may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by February 12, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Recall issues affect our safety on the road some of the issues actually increase our risk of crashing other issues increase our risk of serious injuries in a crash. Jacksonville Motorcycle Accident Claims the Life of a Good Samaritan

Jacksonville's Northside was the scene of a serious motorcycle accident tragically a Good Samaritan rendering aide to the motorcyclist was struck by a car as he attempted to return to his vehicle. The motorcyclist was seriously injured in the initial crash on New Kings Road when he slowed down to turn into a gas station he was struck from behind by a work truck. The truck driver was cited for careless driving. A 71 year old man parked his vehicle in the median and crossed the street to help the injured motorcyclist. He stayed on the scene until Jacksonville Rescue arrived as he crossed the street to return to his vehicle he was struck by a Toyota Camry. The pedestrian who stopped to help suffered life threatening injures. He was transported to UF Health. The motorcyclist was also transported to UF Health with life-threatening injuries. Helping others is the right thing to do so sad to see someone injured while trying to render aide. Florida State law requires drivers to reduce speed to 20 mph less than the posted speed limit and, if safe to do so, vacate the lane closest to stationary emergency vehicles, including towing and recovery vehicles, when traveling in the same direction. If such movement cannot be safely accomplished, the driver shall reduce speed.

Bicyclist Seriously Injured

Alarming statistics of bicyclist seriously injured or even killed continue to escalate this year. August 3rd a bicyclist sustained serious injuries when they were struck by a vehicle on Beach Blvd. at 6th Street. During the same week on August 1st David Talley a 58 year old father and grandfather was struck from behind by a Ford truck while riding his bike on Jacksonville's Westside of town. David Talley died at the scene. July 21st a car collided with a bicycle in Crescent Beach sending the bicyclist to the hospital with serious injuries. The very next day a woman was left in critical condition after she was hit by a vehicle while riding her bike in the Arlington area of Jacksonville. July 12th a bicyclist was taken to UF health after being struck by a vehicle on Marsh Landing. Less than a week after this incident a serious bicycle accident on July 6th claimed the life of Christian Meier a 17 year old decorated member of the Navy Junior ROTC program at Nease High School on Palm Valley Road. How can we change this alarming trend? Drivers need to be aware that 6 p.m.-9p.m. is the time period with the greatest percentage of fatal bike crashes. Don't drive distracted or impaired and always remember to "Look Twice" and "Share the Road." Cyclist and drivers make mistakes that contribute to crashes, but when a crash happens involving a cyclist and a vehicle it is often the cyclist who is seriously injured or killed. The NHTSA has a wealth of information for cyclist. Parents and teachers you can download age appropriate activities provided by the National Highway Traffic Administration to help teach your children more about bicycle safety.
